How to block a specific IP address in Joomla

Updated on Mar 13, 2019

This tutorial reviews the process of blocking a specific IP address in Joomla which will consequently allow you to restrict access to your website for that particular user.

Start by logging into your cPanel account and navigate to the Files tab and then File Manager.

Select Home Directory from the available options. Also, you need to enable the Show Hidden Files (dotfiles). option.

Locate the .htaccess file within the main directory of your website. Select the file and click the Edit button on the top menu. (If the file is not present, you can simply create it via the New File button at the top of the screen.)

In this example, we used the symbol “x” instead of the actual IP address. The rule that you need to place at the top of the .htaccess file to block the IP address is:

deny from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

You only need to substitute the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx example with the actual IP address that you need to block accessing your website. Then click on the Save Changes button to accept the rule.
