How to Act When Your Email is Judged as Spam by the Internet Community

Updated on Oct 14, 2022

Unwanted bulk emails sent over email are referred to as spam or junk email. Most email users struggle with spam, which has become more and more prevalent since the early 1990s.

When one of your emails to someone is rejected and returned as spam even if it is obviously not, it can be very aggravating. This typically indicates that you are attempting to send from an email address that is not permitted on the mail server or that the server finds something incorrect in the email's overall content based on its criteria.

In this post, we will cover a specific error message that tells you your email has been rejected. The exact message is:

"This message has been rejected due to content judged to be spam by the internet community IB212"

What is the Reason for this Error?

If you get an email bounced back with the error message provided above, it usually means that the recipient of your mail is hosting their email with GoDaddy. As their "smtp.secureserver.net" server handles millions of mail accounts, they have to set up custom rules and spam filters that reject some emails automatically.

The error message itself means that part of your email's content or subject has matched previously reported as spam text by GoDaddy customers. When enough complaints have been accumulated, the text that GoDaddy's users classified as spam has been added to the spam filter of GoDaddys server.

Do note that GoDaddy has no obligation and will most likely not reveal the offending text which is getting your emails marked as spam, but you can still check by changing the subject of your email or paraphrasing the text.

The Resolution

As mentioned, GoDaddy usually won't provide senders with details. If you want to try to get an answer from them, the best approach is probably to have your correspondent (the paying GoDaddy customer) ask them, as they have an obligation to them but not to you or us.

If you are sending messages that might make people click "this is spam", you should stop doing that, because it makes this problem happen with text patterns that are specific to you, such as your domain name.

Here is what GoDaddy suggests as a resolution for their users:

Please include an option to opt out in your email messages. Then check your sending lists to ensure you are only sending to recipients who have selected to opt-in to receiving your mail. If you feel this message has been flagged as spam erroneously, please be sure to obtain a copy of the original message attempting to be sent and then contact support.
